How About Them Blazers?

Unfortunately, my gaming advice was right this time, though just barely. Paul Pierce and Wally Szczerbiak were unstoppable, Ryan Gomes dominated the boards, and the Blazers lost, again, 102-96. Nate had nine guys at his disposal, one of them being Ha, a sick Darius (in the literal sense), and not much else. Martell did have a career night, playing 41 minutes and scoring 24 points, but you'd probably be a little delusional if you thought that a 19 year-old rookie could carry this team to victory.

Things didn't get a whole lot better last night, as the Red and Black fell to the Hornets 88-75 at the Rose Garden. Both Zach and Darius had good games, scoring 23 and 22 respectively, but no one else had much to offer. The Blazers shot a ludicrous 41.1% from the free throw line, which has to be the equivalent of closing your eyes and throwing the ball in the general direction of the basket. They also got out-rebounded 46 to 33. On the bright side, the Blazers did shoot a higher field goal percentage than the Hornets, so feel free to revel in the streets over that tidbit.

The hits keep coming tonight, as the Blazers take on newly acquired Brian Skinner's old employer, the Sacramento Kings. The line is Sacto -13.5, but the over/under I'm interested in is how many points will ex-Blazer Sergei Monia score tonight. I'm sure Bonzi can give him a few pointers regarding sticking it to your old team.

Boys, It's Time to Stop

Used to be that one of the most entertaining sideshows in the NBA was Oregonian columnist John Canzano vs. tempestuous young Blazer Bonzi Wells. But then Wells was traded away, and both men moved on, so that long-running spat has...

GAME 32/82, Vs. Indiana, Open Game Thread

I promise to come back full force on Monday. If not, I'll give you your money back.
I'm not yet ready to pronounce the Kings as back - 3 out of 4 is cool and all, but it was the Clippers twice and Boston. And we're still five games under.
Indiana is a pretty good test. They aren't the Indiana everyone thought they'd be - they're underachieving quite a bit, given the Artest Fiasco.
But that doesn't mean the Pacers aren't trouble - look at what they did to Golden State a couple days ago. Giving this team an early lead is like giving them a can of spinach - you've absolutely got to get out ahead and try to hold them off.
I'm pretty glad Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird haven't found a taker for Artest - I've been personally tormented over the question of whether I'd want him in Sacramento. When we're losing bad and looking horrible, I think, "Yeah, what do we have to lose? At least he'll be interesting."
But when our offense is playing well, when we're getting the stops we need to win games, I'm less excited. I like having a team full of sane, if not elite players. It lets me sleep at night.
Someone is going to take him, though, and I kind of hope it's not someone in the division. The Lakers with Artest is frightening. I'd be relegated to praying for Ron-Ron to go Hannibal Lector on Kobe. I wouldn't be horribly concerned if the Warriors got him - they couldn't get that motley crew together in time to make it matter. The Clippers become a lot better, even if they move Corey Maggette, because a lock-up defender is the one thing they lack.
Minnesota seems like a no-brainer; Denver is so crazy about Artest that you'd think they could make it work. If I were the Pacers, I'd give Ron-Ron his wish and work out something with the Knicks. Artest deserves nothing less than to play for the hardest coach on a horrible team in front of his people, who will no doubt refuse to put up with his crazy Hoboken bullshit.
(Can I get into a witness protection program now? Please?)
To the early morning lineups!
INDIANA
PG - Jamaal Tinsley? I really need to brush up on my Indiana Pacers.
SG - Stephen Jackson, former World Championship/Atlanta Hawk
SF - Danny Granger, heralded rookie
PF - Jermaine O'Neal, superstar
C - Jeff Foster? Again, I need to brush up.
SACTOWN
PG - Mike "Still Not An All-Star?" Bibby.
SG - Kevin "Star of the Frosh-Soph Game During All-Star Break" Martin.
SF - Peja "Three-point champion" Stojakovic.
PF - Kenny "Ha ha" Thomas.
C - Brad "Perennial All-Star" Miller.
The line: It's not up yet on Bodog, so I'm going to throw out a +2. And no, I wouldn't bet either way. Maybe an under, if the line is somewhere around 192.
Fun bet o' the night: How vehemently will Grant Napear argue against bringing Ron Artest to SAC? Your choices are a) more vehemently than his assertation that Bonzi did not call out Peja, b) more vehemently than his assertation that Bonzi did not call out Peja, or c) equally vehemently than his assertation that Bonzi did not call out Peja?
Sideshow most likely to be entertaining: Peja Stojakovic, rebounding beast. For what it's worth, Peja was very self-deprecating in talking about his 13 boards after Friday's game. He actually seemed human, as quoted by Sam Amick. But hell, he has seemed a lot more active in all aspects of the game since his last injury. Maybe something snapped inside him? Who knows.
Best matchup: Kings offense vs. Pacers defense. Can they throw up 60 in the first half and shoot over 50 percent from the field? Can Bibby get to his spots at will? Can Brad Miller explode into flames? Will KMart and Peja be able to attack the offensive glass like they did against LAC? If so, this (and probably every game) is a win.
6 p.m. start on Comcast. Watch some football, settle in for hoops. It's on!

When The Levee Breaks, I'll Have No Place To Watch The Kings Suck Ass.

So, 10-17 is bad. 7-9 at home is bad. A second five-game losing streak is bad. Dead last in the Pacific Division for most of December is bad.
Losing to four last-place teams before New Year's is bad. Remember, the Knicks were in the Atlantic cellar at 0-5 when they came in and stomped the Kings at ARCO. So were the Southwest Division's Rockets. We lost a tight one in Charlotte (last place in the Southeast) a week prior to last night's embarassment against Portland (last place in the Northwest).
The only division whose last place team we haven't lost to is the Central. The key there? We haven't played last-place Chicago (who would likely be the best team in the Atlantic and second-best team in the Southeast). Don't fret - we are 0-3 against the Central, though.
The elusive sixth last-place team in the league has beaten Sacramento pretty consistently throughout the season, because the sixth last-place team is Sacramento.
Monday night was one of those games - stupid little turnovers, a lack of defensive effort from most of the team, a failure in execution. The fact that the highest Game Score on the team was a 15.1 illustrates that rather clearly.

Player GS GS/40
Peja 15.1 18.3
Reef 14.9 16.6
Miller 14.0 15.1
Bibby 12.3 12.6
Martin 11.0 16.9
Garcia 8.0 16.8
Price 3.9 15.6
Skinner 2.6 14.9
Thomas 1.9 6.3
Nasty -0.7 -5.6
Hart -0.8 -5.3

Price, Garcia and Skinner were the only Kings that showed any sort of energy outside Quarter 1, though Shareef had his moments. Bibby was ice cold. And when Bibby's ice cold, he's just a waste of a player out there.
Peja, whose back injury I'm convinced was a setup, was red hot early but cooled off considerably as the game went on. Again, if he's not shooting well, he adds little (though he's much better defensively than Bibby).
Brad was hitting the boards well - he finished with 12 overall. But he wasn't sneaking any passes inside, he wasn't springing Bibby free and he wasn't getting a lot of really open looks (despite shooting 5-10).
Shareef was consistent ole Shareef - 8-15, 18 points, 2 blocks, mostly acceptable defense on ZBo (who can apparentlyt hit the 18-footer now). You'd like to see Reef get some more rebounds, especially on this poor rebounding team. But beggars can't be choosers.
Price is quickly making Jason Hart irrelevant. Actually, The Hitman - whose acquisition I absolutely loved this offseason - is making The Hitman irrelevant. I think his problem is that he's a slave to Adelman's system when the bench certainly doesn't have those parts. He needs to just play point guard when he's out there. Find an open man. Take open shots. Just play, Jason.
That said, I think Price is our best defensive guard right now, along with being explosive on offense. He had a couple of sure assists go astray because teammates just didn't know they were coming last night (including the drop-off to Reef for what should've been an easy dunk).
Kevin Martin, one of my favorite players, has been beyond disappointing in his two starts. He seemed to take on the laissez-faire attitude of the starters when we all hoped he would bring some fire and explosiveness to the floor. Lazy passes, no motion away from the ball, nothing. He's actually like a faster Peja out there, and one who can't hit a jumper. It's further magnified because Bonzi was so busy in the starting lineup - it was pretty clear last night how much this team misses that.
(And what about the f'n Kingsblogger? What the hell was that starting lineup? Two out five right on Portland and four out of five on the team he covers? What a lout. Game Score for TZ? -5.0. Fire TZ! Fire TZ!)
More than anything, this drifting cause needs a kick in the groin. (NOTE: We're not talking about TZ anymore. Thanks.) Be it trade or firing, it needs to be done. I can't imagine there will too many more losses to last-place teams - or first-place teams, like the one the Kings are visiting tonight - before the axe falls on someone.

Bonzi Wells & Shareef Abdur-Rahim: Hecka Good

I like Bonzi Wells. He hits three-pointers from the corner to win games on the road.
Also, I like Shareef Abdur-Rahim. He plays balls out in the fourth quarter and makes former MVPs take bad baseline jumpers in critical possessions.
Ahh... the sweet taste of prolonged victory.

GAME 12/82: vs. New Jersey, Open Game Thread

The Nets franchise is fascinating. I wholeheartedly support its move to Brooklyn - little could do more for the NBA than sticking a team in Brooklyn. One thing that could? It involves a parade and J Street.
Count me among those who pray to the basketball gods that Carter, Kidd and Jefferson are still with the team when they move. Jersey sales will be unreal - they'll even surpass the vaunted Oakland Randy Moss jersey and the long-awaited Rudy Gay jersey, once he joins the Heat.
Speaking of jersey sales, I don't know many people lining up to get their Nenad Krstic #12. But if they'd just stick his first name on the back - Nene style - they'd get some buyers. What a fun name. Nenad. Say it. Nenad.
(And my gay jokes and genital jokes are officially over. You may proceed.)
Vinsanity (imagine how tasteless that nickname will be once the guy gets Alzheimer's) may not play tonight; he apparently strained something or other against the Warriors Tuesday.
My guess is that he just wanted to watch Lindsay Lohan on the American Music Awards. I'm also guessing that he's not a fan of "Two and a Half Men," so he'll probably show up at ARCO tonight.
Peja's status is also apparently up in the air. I'm not listening to 1140, though, so who the hell knows. I need a source deep within the Kings trainer's office. Anyone reading?
Anyways, here's my best guess at tonight's starting lineups:
THE FLYING NENADS
PG - That Jason Kidd guy.
SG - Vince Carter. Or not.
SF - Dick Jefferson
PF - Not Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Ha ha.
C - Nenad.
SACRAMENTO
PG - Mike "Justify My Thug" Bibby
SG - Bonzi "Lucifer" Wells
SF - Peja "Change Clothes" Stojakovic. Or not.
PF - I've got 99 Problems, but Shareef ain't one.
C - Brad's got some dirt on his pickup, could you wash it off for him?
The line: ESPN says -5. I think I'd take that, if I knew Peja was going to play. But I don't, so I won't. (Have I advocated betting on the Kings once this season? I don't think so.)
Fun bet o' the night: Francisco Garcia minutes played, should Peja get the OK (from his little finger) to start. I say take the under at 12.
Sideshow most likely to be entertaining: Brad Miller, who had better be upset over his Monday performance, abusing the Nets D. Angry Brad is awesome!
Best matchup: Shareef vs. The Jason Collins Experience. Oh yes.
Grant Napear, in brief and in advance: "That's why Geoff Petrie is the best in the league, alright? Right there, Shareef Abdur-Rahim. What did Rod Thorn get? He got Marc Jackson. Geoff Petrie is the best in the league."
Forgotten note from previous Spurs game recaps: Impersonating Grant reminded me of the vomit-inducing moment of Monday's game: Jerry Reynolds and Grant Napear discussing how Robert Horry stole a championship ring from them. JR is one thing - he's an executive or some sort, he probably deserves a ring. But Grant? The play-by-play guy and a local radio host? He would've gotten a ring? That sickens me.
Well, wait: Do I get a ring if the Kings win it all? I am an unofficial blogger after all. If I have to battle Alex Carnavale for it, I will! Dammit.
Enjoy the game. I might get an update in early Thursday morning, though one might not want to hold one's breath. Not that one would hold one's breath or anything.
Let's go Sha-, err Kings! A winning percentage above .400 awaits!

Mostly Miscellany, Thanksgiving Eve

Because bloggers don't get extended holidays...
The web version of The Bee has failed to tell me the chances of Peja sitting out tonight. It simply says that he's day-to-day. I mostly think that's why there's no line for tonight's game - no one knows if the guy will suit up.
Speaking of suits, here are my extended thoughts about Monday's game:

I vomited in the second quarter, and it wasn't due to the Kings performance. It was the performance of the Comcast technicians: For about 10 minutes, the feed was shaky and fuzzy and dim. I had a Blair Witch flashback. Couldn't get Dramamine fast enough.

I know this was said a lot in the 2004 playoffs when Tony Parker was running circles around the Lakers, but would it kill someone to just lay the lumber on him when he drives to the baseline and floats there, looking for a open man? He's French - he'll seriously think twice about it once pummelled (unless he knows he has big, powerful allies coming over). I might be more annoyed by TeePee than I am by Balki. Good grief, what an annoying team.

Gregg Popovich: The mullet will not get you extra Coach of the Year votes. There's a reason the NHL in the #5 major league.

Not sure I understand why Shareef got a technical. But he didn't seem to mind. I did understand why Bonzi got a technical, and he did seem to mind. Shows how much I know.

Either Kenny Thomas has a really good relationship with Francisco Garcia where he feels comfortable enough to yell at him about coming to double Tim Duncan (and fouling him), or Kenny Thomas is a very self-assured defender.

Of all the disappointments on this team so far, Brian Skinner has been the biggest. He's not doing anything but taking up space when on the floor. Truly discouraging after a mammoth preseason filled with jumpers, blocks and putbacks. We need that Brian Skinner.

Fabricio Oberto: Funny-looking from a distance, rockstar lookalike from up close.

It's amazing that Pop took Duncan out when he got his fifth foul. Pop knows as well as everyone that no ref is going to a sixth foul against Tim Duncan in a close game.

The league is going to figure out Manu Ginobili one of these days, as if he was Barry Zito. He's flashy, but he can be stopped.

Peja can do better on the suit. Remember, P, you're an upcoming free agent! You gotta look money, all the time.

Still no word on the standings in the NBA celebrity fantasy league. If I'm Bill Simmons, I start releasing results so that a nasty rumor about losing handily to Star Jones doesn't surface.
f the Monday night Packers-Vikings game. Also, I really have no idea what to make of Simmons' shoes in said segment. Especially after seeing him rocking shell-toe Adidas in the NY Times piece.
Last Simmons item: The controversy over Renee Herlocker is stupid, and the Intern is a jerk for not giving a link to YAYsports!, even after admitting someone had already made her (semi-)famous. It shows a certain out-of-touchness.
Another sign fantasy sports are inherently evil: I've been openly rooting for Kobe to score 40 a night. Yes, that Kobe. I'm going to hell.
Nice shootout between Gonzaga and Michigan State last night. Adam Morrison is like Kyle Korver with driving ability. I turned it on near the end of regulation. Tom Izzo really takes the fun out of Hawaiian shirts, no?
Back later with an awesomely robust game preview.

GAME 7 of 82, vs. New York, Open Game Thread

Ah, the NBA schedule... For every Detroit Pistons, there's a New York Knicks. God bless Russ Granik.
Tip-off around 6 p.m., televised on Comcast SportsNet with radio on 1140 AM.
STARTING LINEUPS:
NEW YORK
PG - Stephon "The Untradeable" Marbury
SG - Quentin "The Recently Traded" Richardson
SF - Matt "Damn, I Wish He Was Backing Up Peja Like Old Times" Barnes
PF - Antonio "Haven't I Played With Half of You Guys Before?" Davis
C - Eddy "Takes A Licking But Keeps On... Oh Wait" Curry
SACRAMENTO
PG - Michael Bibby, The Pride of Cherry Hill, New Jersey
SG - Gawen Deangelo Wells
SF - The Belgrade Bomber
PF - Julius Shareef Abdur-Rahim
C - Bradley Alan Miller
(Bonzi, I'm sorry. Please don't destroy me.)
The line: -7.5. Again, I'd be reluctant to bet on the Kings until they put, you know, like two solid games in a row together.
Fun bet o' the night: Matt Barnes stops against Peja - remember, Barnesy went up against Peja in practice who knows how many times. Also, Peja is kinda easy to figure out - force him to step to his right. Peja needs to get some excellent screens. I predict 16 points for The Belgrade Bomber.
Sideshow most likely to be entertaining: Stephon Marbury versus Larry Brown. There's comedy, there's high comedy, and then there's paying a ridiculous sum of money for an egomaniacal coach who always clashes with his star player if they don't show the fundamentals of "playing the right way" on ever play, especially when your team's superstar has never played the right way by any stretch of the imagination. Throw in that superstar having a pretty much untradeable contract (which is redundant when talking about the Knicks) and the coach having a long-term deal. Also, your general manager is one of the three worst in the Association. And ACTION!
Matchup to watch: Larry Brown vs. Rick Adelman. Remember, some of you Kings fans wanted a coach like LB this offseason instead of Adelmania. Fools, all of you. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that LB has only won ONE NBA title - you'd swear he was the second coming of Red Auerbach or something.
The verdict: Kings by 12. Bibby gets 20+, Shareef is the model of consistency and Barnesy has a ridiculous game.
I know it's early (it almost always will be on Sundays), but um, let's go Kings! The middle of the pack awaits!

Weekend Preview: 11/4-11/6

Here comes the first weekend of regular season basketball action in … well … in a long time. And here at FBB we couldn’t be more excited. 25 games, three days, and we’ll start to see some separation in the fantasy basketball standings. Coming out of the gate strong is important for sure, but making that key pickup is even more important. This weekend is going to be where statistical anomalies turn into real trends, and here’s what we’re going to be looking for:

How are those rookies doing?
Now, odds are you won’t be finding Chris Paul or Andrew Bogut on your waiver wire right now. And if you are, we’d like to join your league. But there are plenty of other rookies who are fighting for playing time and establishing themselves in rotations. Mid-first-rounders like Nate Robinson, Hakim Warrick, Johan Petro, Danny Granger and Joey Graham will either be high-risk pickups or complete waiver-wire fodder after this weekend.

We’ll also see a couple of rookies who were drafted in a lot of leagues prove to be worthless. For example, Channing Frye, who is having trouble finding the court with Larry Brown standing in his way. Raymond Felton is caught fighting for minutes with Brevin Knight – which was expected, but still.

Minutes, Minutes, Minutes
If you’re new to FBB, you might want to brace yourself, because if there’s one this we love to talk about (other than point guards), it’s minutes. And you’re gonna hear a LOT about minutes this year from us. Early surprises are Antoine Walker’s 42.5 mpg for the Heat, and Ron Artest seeing 40 mpg so far for the Pacers considering the depth of both teams.

Injury Reports
Shaq (surprise!), Baron (double surprise!) … does “I told you so” mean anything to you guys? These next few days will be pivotal to both these guys and their backups.

Free Agents Fitting In
Here in Washington, we’re quietly chuckling at the Lakers and their big offseason acquisition, Kwame Brown. But we’re also watching Raja Bell and James Jones in Phoenix, Bonzi Wells in Sacramento, and all the new faces in Cleveland.

Game of the Week(end)
Atlanta Hawks at Los Angeles Clippers, Friday, 10:30 PM.
Now, don’t laugh. The FBB version of Game of the Week has absolutely nothing to do with high-profile match-ups, future playoff teams, or anything like that. We’re looking for games that will be of interest strictly from a fantasy standpoint. Here are two teams with a bunch of question marks in terms of PT and the value of some of their big-name players.

For the Hawks, Joe Johnson found out pretty quickly that you pick up a lot more assists dishing to Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudamire than you do dishing to Josh Childress and Zaza Pachulia. Meanwhile, Al Harrington’s ankle injury throws another wrench in the ongoing Childress/Josh Smith/Marvin Williams

For the Clippers, the big question is if Chris Kaman will be able to recover from his 5-TO, 19-minute performance Wednesday night. Plus, who is this James Singleton guy who went for 14 and 10? Also we’ll be watching to see if Corey Maggette is back in the lineup, and if so, how effective he is.

Overall Rankings: 91 to 120

1 to 30
31 to 60
61 to 90

91. Jamaal Tinsley – The ultimate tease; few can match his 3s/steals/assists combo, but he plain cannot shoot or stay healthy.
92. Eddie Jones – Certainly on the downside of his career, but can handle lots of minutes and hit 3s with the best.
93. Al Harrington – Won’t ever have a huge breakout like some had hoped, but should be solid as long as minutes are there.
94. Morris Peterson – See above.
95. Gerald Wallace – His big numbers (for his position) in steals and blocks will do a lot to offset his seriously lackluster shooting.
96. Ricky Davis – He’ll start, yes, but averaged 33 mpg last year and wasn’t anything all that special.
97. Sam Cassell – Could be a disaster, but Livingston is young and injury-prone; can’t forget how consistently awesome Sam was the three years before last.
98. Mike James – As long as he’s starting, he’ll be well worth using.
99. Mike Sweetney – Needs to lock down starting job, but will be a rebound/FG% monster if he does.
100. Sebastian Telfair – If he could shoot the 3 he’d be better, but 6.7 apg and 1.4 spg in April make him an OK option.
101. Mehmet Okur – As always, potential is there, but he’s usually frustrating to own with Sloan getting much of the blame.
102. Joel Przybilla – Ask the folks who drafted Mark Blount and Samuel Dalembert last year how reliable big men who finish strong are.
103. J.R. Smith – Hasn’t shown he can do anything but shoot a bunch of 3s; don’t go crazy with the kids.
104. Troy Murphy – We’re never too high on non-hustle stat guys, but if the Warriors run enough he should have some value.
105. Ben Gordon – Have to think he’ll break into the starting lineup eventually; still is a pretty one-dimensional player.
106. Raja Bell – Someone will probably jump the gun thinking he’ll replicate JoeJohn’s numbers from last year; that’s quite unlikely, but he should be solid.
107. Al Jefferson – Pick him up in January after the guy who drafted him too early gets frustrated and drops him.
108. P.J. Brown – Keeps on plugging away; needs to get that FG% back up to around 47%, but will be underrated as usual.
109. Wally Szczerbiak – His strong percentages make him worth having around, especially if he can get back up to 15 shots per game.
110. Nenad Krstic – Another one of those strong-finish big men to be wary of, especially since he doesn’t block many shots.
111. Brendan Haywood – OK, a bit of a homer pick, but it’s not unreasonably to expect 2 bpg with very nice boards and FG%.
112. Erick Dampier – He might be interested, he might not. His 12/12 with 2 blocks from a couple years is hard to ignore, but honestly, you probably should.
113. Eddy Curry – All of the big men in this batch have major questions, so just pick one you like. Could be an offensive force, but don’t expect any rebounds or blocks all of a sudden.
114. Jameer Nelson – He seems to be buried right now, just can’t understand why; 14.9/4.0/4.6 with 1.5 spg and 1.2 3pg after the break shows he’s more than ready.
115. Bonzi Wells – Is slated for lots of PT, but doesn’t have the greatest game and can get on coaches’ bad sides quickly.
116. Theo Ratliff – Even in a very off year averaged 2.5 bpg; if Przybilla isn’t for real should get a chance to reclaim his starting job.
117. Darius Miles – Perennial tease, but Portland is very thin this year and he does get a decent number of steals and blocks for his position.
118. Eddie Griffin – Yet another perennial tease, but he can be very effective with only 25-28 mpg.
119. Raymond Felton – We think he’ll get there eventually…
120. Brevin Knight – But until then, these two are going to hurt each other’s value.

2005 Fantasy Tiers By Position: Shooting Guards

Ah, the shooting guard. Perhaps the deepest of all the positions. But that doesn’t mean you can wait ‘till the end of the draft to take one. If you’ve done your research, and if you can afford to do so, grabbing an elite SG early in the draft can be huge for your team.

On a side note, there are a TON of players listed at GF. DM wanted to list them in both SG and SF tiers, but there’s just not time for that. So we somewhat arbitrarily divided them up according to where they generally play. Anyhow:

Tier One: Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce, Vince Carter, Ray Allen.
These are the guys that 10 year old kids are pretending to be in their driveway. They are a boon for any fantasy team and if you can get one, you’re off to a great start. It’s tough to pass up a top PG or C in the first 2 rounds, but in some situations, it’s the best move. These guys should all be gone by the end of the second or beginning of the third round.

Tier Two: Manu Ginobili, Joe Johnson, Larry Hughes, Jason Richardson.
This is the “yeah, but …” tier. All of these guys COULD be over-valued. Johnson and Hughes are on new teams. Richardson has to play a full year with Baron Davis. And Ginobili exploded in the playoffs, perhaps over-inflating his value on the national stage. Still, they should all at least be solid, and if you can get any of them in the fourth round, you should.

Tier Three: Michael Redd, Rip Hamilton, Cuttino Mobley, Andre Iguodala.
As deep as we like to think that the SG position is, the truth is that this is the last tier that consists of folks you can stick in the lineup and just not worry about. All of them will undoubtedly have plenty of playing time and, while all of them have different strengths, they’re all very low-risk.

Tier Four: Bonzi Wells, Jamal Crawford, Stephen Jackson, JR Smith, Ricky Davis, Jerry Stackhouse.
Every position has a high-risk, high-reward tier. Yesterday with point guards, we found it fell in the Fifth Tier. Here with SG’s, it’s the fourth. These guys, admittedly, aren’t huge risks, but come the end of the year all are capable of having put up 20 ppg with decent numbers surrounding it. At the same time, they can also end up with 12 ppg and have borderline fantasy value.

Tier Five: Ben Gordon, Eddie Jones, Morris Peterson, Gordon Giricek.
This is the last group of shooting guards who should be drafted. Yes, there are probably other ones who could potentially have fantasy value, but if it’s the last round, you should be scouring the scarcity positions for that deep sleeper, not the shooting guards. These guys are nice fantasy filler, mostly bench guys that could be on and of the waiver wires all year with the possible exception of Gordon.

Tomorrow: Small Forwards

Bonzi: Not the Guy He Plays on T.V.

OK, so we've run out of clever puns involving the word "Bonzi." We've failed you - please find it in your heart to forgive us.

<align ="justify">The Bonztacular One (whew) was on the Rise Guys this morning, chatting about second chances, defense and crappy golf scores. Less than informative and certainly not hard-hitting, but the interview gave some nice insight to who Bonzi will try to be in his Sacramento career. If KHTK archives it on the site, it's definitely worth a listen.

<align ="left">Bonzi's best quote was on his defense, where he told fans not to expect him to lock down the opposing two-guard every night. There's no doubt the trade for Bonzi immediately made him the best defender in the starting five - but really, a 65-year-old Bill Russell could be the best defender on this squad. But it appears Bonzi grasps that this team won't be holding many teams below 90 points this season, and also that the West still has some pretty decent SGs (hi, Kobe and Manu and Sugar Ray).

Bonzi came off of as incredibly personable and even funny (we laughed twice). Of course, he's not going to come out and be a jerk in one of his first media appearances in town, and the Men of Rise were obviously (and correctly) soft in their few questions about Bonzi's checkered past. He responded to one of those questions by saying he's "not the guy he plays on T.V." - that because he's a tough, physical, mouthy player, his rep as a meanie is blown up.

We were all for Bonzi when it was rumored, when it happened and when it appeared he would be the only big move. Shareef Abdur-Rahim was a fantastic signing, but who's to say the Bonzi move won't be bigger for this team if the one-year stint turns into a several-year tour. Perimeter toughness, a low post presence and some positional versality - that's a pretty good package for an oaf and damaged goods.</align></align>

Mo-Town

The Detroit News reports that Detroit is offering Mo Evans $1.5 million per in a multi-year deal.

They apparently want him to back up Tayshaun Prince. He played almost all of his minutes last season at shooting guard, and spent more time at the point than backing up Peja.

It was pretty obvious once Francisco Garcia was drafted and Bonzi Wells was brought over that Mo wasn't in Sacramento's plans for next year. We're surprised, though, it took a team so long to make a play for him. The Spurs were reportedly interested, as were the Timberwolves. But we haven't heard anything in weeks.

I still wonder if a sign-and-trade involving Darius and Mo can't be worked out in the next seven days (the time Petrie has to match the offer before Detroit gets Mo).

More old faces in new places

Charley Rosen continues his off-season breakdown of old faces showing up in new places, leading with an examination of whether Bonzi Wells will be able to rebuild his reputation in Sacramento. His assessment? Don't bet on it.
