How About Them Blazers?

Unfortunately, my gaming advice was right this time, though just barely. Paul Pierce and Wally Szczerbiak were unstoppable, Ryan Gomes dominated the boards, and the Blazers lost, again, 102-96. Nate had nine guys at his disposal, one of them being Ha, a sick Darius (in the literal sense), and not much else. Martell did have a career night, playing 41 minutes and scoring 24 points, but you'd probably be a little delusional if you thought that a 19 year-old rookie could carry this team to victory.

Things didn't get a whole lot better last night, as the Red and Black fell to the Hornets 88-75 at the Rose Garden. Both Zach and Darius had good games, scoring 23 and 22 respectively, but no one else had much to offer. The Blazers shot a ludicrous 41.1% from the free throw line, which has to be the equivalent of closing your eyes and throwing the ball in the general direction of the basket. They also got out-rebounded 46 to 33. On the bright side, the Blazers did shoot a higher field goal percentage than the Hornets, so feel free to revel in the streets over that tidbit.

The hits keep coming tonight, as the Blazers take on newly acquired Brian Skinner's old employer, the Sacramento Kings. The line is Sacto -13.5, but the over/under I'm interested in is how many points will ex-Blazer Sergei Monia score tonight. I'm sure Bonzi can give him a few pointers regarding sticking it to your old team.

Ruben Movin'

So it finally happened. Ruben Patterson and Charles Smith are on their way to Denver along with Reggie Evans, Voshon Lenard and Vitaly "The Potato" Potepenko (credit for that nick goes to Nuss at SuperSonicSoul) are new Blazers, and Earl Watson, Byron Russell, and Denver's 2nd rounder are on the way to Seattle as we type. I gotta say that I like this trade, as it we rid ourselves of the Rube and we don't take back much. Lenard provides a decent stop-gap at SG and, probably most importantly, comes off the books next year, while Vitaly, though basically worthless, only makes about 3 million a year and is an upgrade from our third string turned starting center Ha. Ruben had some nice things to say after the loss to the Bobcats last night regarding his situation. So for hopefully the last time, take it away Ruben:

"This might be my last one. Thought I'd go out with a bang. This is it. I mean, let me be free. They need to trade me for a big man. This has gotta be my last game. I know the trading deadline is tomorrow and nothing against the fans of <st1 :city st="on"><st1 :place st="on"><st1 :place st="on"><st1 :city st="on">Portland</st1></st1></st1></st1>, but I just want to be happy. Hopefully, things go right for me. I just want to start my career over."

Yes Ruben, 30 year-old back-up small forwards are setting the NBA on fire, and I'm sure you'll be the next to do so. Besides Ruben, I'll save my sympathy for Charles Smith, as he has the unlucky fortune of having to continue to serve as your teammate, and the citizens of <st1 :state st="on"><st1 :place st="on"><st1 :state st="on"><st1 :place st="on">Colorado</st1></st1></st1></st1>, as if they haven't had enough experiance with NBA players moonlighting as sex offenders. I'm guessing Rube is going to be getting the majority of time at shooting guard, because he sure as hell isn't getting his personally mandated 25 minutes a night behind Carmelo. George Karl has said that he likes Ruben's game, though Rube's game has never been the problem. Time will tell whether or not Karl will like Ruben's mouth, attitude, and his way with the ladies.

The move also reunites Ruben with his old <st1 :city st="on"><st1 :place st="on"><st1 :city st="on"><st1 :place st="on">Cincinnati</st1></st1></st1></st1> partner in crime Kenyon Martin. No word yet on whether or not Bob Huggins is sober enough to be brought on as an assistant coach, but Karl is definitely going to need someone around to dole out hush money to the scores of traumatized Denver residents whom Rube and K-Mart will undoubtedly leave in their wake.

So Denver gets some defense, Seattle gets a back-up PG with a hella long contract and a decrepit Byron Russell, and Portland gets a back-up PF/C and a little cap room, and one less Ruben Patterson. Wrap it up; I'll take it. So long Ruben, don't forget to register when you get to <st1 :state st="on"><st1 :place st="on"><st1 :state st="on"><st1 :place st="on">Colorado</st1></st1></st1></st1>, you scum bag.

Update: It seems as if I spoke too soon. Rumor is the deal now has Brian Skinner coming to the Blazers from Sacto instead of Vitaly, in exchange for Sergei. Potepenko supposedly is off to the Kings, and the Blazers are still getting Lenard. I liked the first version a lot better. Skinner makes too damn much. This still hasn't been finalized, so who knows what it will look like when everything shakes out.

Kings Trade for Tubby White Guy, Foreigner

Rejoice Greg Ostertag fans, rejoice!
The Kings have acquired Vitaly Potapenko and Sergei Monia for Brian Skinner in a deadline-day trade, various sources are reporting.
As for Skindog, the first of the Philly Three to be peddled: We'll miss ya, dude. Not in a Bobby Jackson, Chris Webber way. Hell, not even in a Maurice Evans, Eddie House way. But we'll miss you. Your block on Marion in Albuquerque was the highlight of the 2005-06 preseason. Thank you.
Now, on the the new parts. Here is the only sentence I should have to post on Vitaly Potapenko to give you an idea of who he is: Seattle coach Bob Hill benched the Ukraine Train for being overweight and out of shape. Flashbacks, anyone?
That said, Pomme-Frites (yes, that is our first attempt at dubbing Vitaly) is damn near a 7-footer, so we have a tall guy not named Jamal Sampson we can actually stick in for Brad. (Skindog was 6'9 in heels.) VP is making $3 million this year, and will make $3.3 million next season. After that, the contract is over.

Now about this Sergei Monia fellow. You want to know how hard it is to find information on him? I'm not even sure his name is spelled "Sergei Monia." Sports Illustrated spells it "Sergei Monya," and HoopsHype calls him "Sergey Monya." He's a Russian rookie, seeing very limited in Portland. A profile on NBADraft.net said Sergei "hs a nice midrange jumper and is a solid 3pt shooter, but his best attribute is his team defense, he knows how to help teamates and he's a pretty good one on one defender too." The stats say differently, as Sergei's FG% is around 37% for the season. He has, however, been trapped on the bench of a cruddy Portland team.
No word on whether he and now-estranged Russian Blazer buddy Viktor Khryapa had a Franchise-Cuttino relationship that could lead to some issues.
I don't expect either newbie to make a major difference immediately - I mean, has Skinner been making a difference? Sergei is a bit younger than Kevin Martin and Francisco Garcia and much more raw (it would seem), so I don't anticipate him affecting their PT any. Monia seems like a solid Petrie chip, though.
Pomme-Frites could get some minutes in relief of Brad, though he is actually allergic to the ball on offense. Some blocks and a decent rebound percentage when he's in is all we should hope for.
(he most disturbing part of all this is that if someone asked me which NBA player I most resemble, I'd probably have to say Sergei Monia. Except less Russian looking.)

Mostly Miscellany, Thanksgiving Eve

Because bloggers don't get extended holidays...
The web version of The Bee has failed to tell me the chances of Peja sitting out tonight. It simply says that he's day-to-day. I mostly think that's why there's no line for tonight's game - no one knows if the guy will suit up.
Speaking of suits, here are my extended thoughts about Monday's game:

I vomited in the second quarter, and it wasn't due to the Kings performance. It was the performance of the Comcast technicians: For about 10 minutes, the feed was shaky and fuzzy and dim. I had a Blair Witch flashback. Couldn't get Dramamine fast enough.

I know this was said a lot in the 2004 playoffs when Tony Parker was running circles around the Lakers, but would it kill someone to just lay the lumber on him when he drives to the baseline and floats there, looking for a open man? He's French - he'll seriously think twice about it once pummelled (unless he knows he has big, powerful allies coming over). I might be more annoyed by TeePee than I am by Balki. Good grief, what an annoying team.

Gregg Popovich: The mullet will not get you extra Coach of the Year votes. There's a reason the NHL in the #5 major league.

Not sure I understand why Shareef got a technical. But he didn't seem to mind. I did understand why Bonzi got a technical, and he did seem to mind. Shows how much I know.

Either Kenny Thomas has a really good relationship with Francisco Garcia where he feels comfortable enough to yell at him about coming to double Tim Duncan (and fouling him), or Kenny Thomas is a very self-assured defender.

Of all the disappointments on this team so far, Brian Skinner has been the biggest. He's not doing anything but taking up space when on the floor. Truly discouraging after a mammoth preseason filled with jumpers, blocks and putbacks. We need that Brian Skinner.

Fabricio Oberto: Funny-looking from a distance, rockstar lookalike from up close.

It's amazing that Pop took Duncan out when he got his fifth foul. Pop knows as well as everyone that no ref is going to a sixth foul against Tim Duncan in a close game.

The league is going to figure out Manu Ginobili one of these days, as if he was Barry Zito. He's flashy, but he can be stopped.

Peja can do better on the suit. Remember, P, you're an upcoming free agent! You gotta look money, all the time.

Still no word on the standings in the NBA celebrity fantasy league. If I'm Bill Simmons, I start releasing results so that a nasty rumor about losing handily to Star Jones doesn't surface.
f the Monday night Packers-Vikings game. Also, I really have no idea what to make of Simmons' shoes in said segment. Especially after seeing him rocking shell-toe Adidas in the NY Times piece.
Last Simmons item: The controversy over Renee Herlocker is stupid, and the Intern is a jerk for not giving a link to YAYsports!, even after admitting someone had already made her (semi-)famous. It shows a certain out-of-touchness.
Another sign fantasy sports are inherently evil: I've been openly rooting for Kobe to score 40 a night. Yes, that Kobe. I'm going to hell.
Nice shootout between Gonzaga and Michigan State last night. Adam Morrison is like Kyle Korver with driving ability. I turned it on near the end of regulation. Tom Izzo really takes the fun out of Hawaiian shirts, no?
Back later with an awesomely robust game preview.

Weekend Review

For the first time since I can remember, Selection Sunday came and went and I really couldn’t have cared less. Rather than watching the Big Ten or ACC Finals, I was busy peeking in on Dallas/Minnesota and Houston/Sacramento. I’m not sure what that says about me, but keep this in mind – the NCAA Tournament is a great chance for you to sneak in and make some great pickups while everyone else is distracted by opening weekend. Remember, no matter how much studying and thinking you do regarding the NCAA Tourney, you’ve got no chance. None. Zero. Okay? Good. Now on to Fantasy Basketball…

FBB Roadtrip!

That’s right, I was out of town on "business" Thursday and Friday. I know, you’re shocked that FBB doesn’t provide enough income on it’s own, but it doesn’t. Anyhow, I was able to take advantage of being in lovely Philadelphia by going to the Sixers/Bobcats game on Friday night. It wasn’t much of a game. After keeping it tied after one quarter, the Bobcats seemingly gave up. The Sixers opened the second with a 19-2 run, and never looked back, winning 112-80. With most starters resting in the 4th quarter, the game did not really provide all that much fantasy insight. But a couple of things did strike me:

Allen Iverson is one of the best passers in the NBA. A lot of guys rack up assists by passing to a guy on the perimeter who knocks down a jumper. Not AI. At least 3, maybe 4 of his 12 assists that night were on spectacular alley-oops. A couple more were thread-the-needle passes to cutting teammates. A very impressive evening from AI, and I think he’ll be running the point for years to come in Philly.

Kyle Korver could be worth drafting in the middle rounds next year. His repartee with Iverson is great. One thing that Iverson’s never really had is that knockdown 3-point shooter. Other than Iverson, Aaron McKie – he of the .352 career 3pt% - has been the leading three-point shooter on the squad for most of the past 5 years. Now with Iverson playing the point, he’s doing more driving and kicking out, which means more 3’s for Korver. Plus, he’s a huge fan favorite in Philly.

Emeka Okafor is the only Bobcat worth playing every single night. The rest will simply not get the minutes to be effective. Primoz Brezec, Marvin Ely and Malik Allen overload the frontcourt, and even with Brevin Knight out, Jason Hart played only 21 minutes in the game. Maybe next year, Charlotte.

Miller? Damn near killed her!

Well I guess this is why you trade Webber for 3 decent bigs. With Brad Miller out for what is likely the rest of the regular season, all the Kings horses and all the Kings men are going to see a significant bump in stats. Brian Skinner has averaged 10.9/10.6 with 2.7 blocks in 34.4 minutes since taking over for Miller, and will be a decent starter at center over the rest of the year. The Big Three of Peja, Cuttino Mobley and Mike Bibby will be counted on for the majority of the scoring, as evidenced by the fact that they took 61% of their team’s shots in their loss to Houston on Sunday. Something tells me that Peja still isn’t healthy, as evidenced by his horrendous line on Friday. In 38 minutes, he had 6 points, 1 board, 1 assist, no steals, no blocks, and shot 2-10 from the field. This, from a first-round pick in most leagues this year, with no Brad Miller or Webber in the lineup? He may have recovered somewhat on Sunday, but keep an eye of this situation.

Miller? Damn near killed her! Part 2

Reggie Miller isn’t done producing just yet. Sure he’s 39 years old and still possibly the skinniest player in league history, and sure he gets banged around a lot, but Reggie just keeps coming back. And how! Over his last 5, he’s averaged 21.4 points, with 1.6 3’s and 97.1 FT%. Yes, those are the only categories he’ll ever help you in, but if you need help in those categories, by all means go get him if he’s available.

Tick, Tick, Tick

Less than two hours until the trade deadline and the morning after a very good win for the Lakers, getting wins you're not playing your best is what playoff teams do and well start with the words of GM Mitch Kupchak from the LA Times this morning.

"It's unlikely we're going to make a trade," Laker General Manager Mitch Kupchak said.

The two big rumored deals for the Lakers involved some version of a Peja for Odom deal with Sacramento, but that isn't happening now that Webber's gone they need Peja's scoring. The other was some kind of deal for Baron Davis, but if he is going anywhere it appears to be to Golden State. I wasn't fond of either of those deals for the Lakers, so I think Mitch s stance is for the best.

-------------------------------------------

Two thoughts on executed trades:

Getting Webber could be huge for Philly, if his knees hold up, but I don't really get it for Sacramento. I understand they are trying to get back to the success they had when Webber started last season on the IR. I understand it was going to be hard to get equal value for Webber (PER of 21.35) but the three guys Sacramento got Kenny Thomas (13.48 PER), Brian Skinner (6.13) and Corliss Williamson (14.94) not only are average or below average replacements, they have contracts that run through at least 2007. Sacramento is stuck with these guys for a few years.

We'll see what happens to Sacramento, but they are 5 games ahead of the Lakers, so they wouldn't be easy to catch.

Jiri Welsch is worth a first rounder?
