Team USA is Ready.

The last friendly has been played. The US has went undefeated in the warm-ups. There's only one player left to cut after a less-than-serious injury pulled Gilbert Arenas out.
  This team is ready.
The real tournament starts Saturday, when the Americans will face Puerto Rico to open up Group D action. And with all due respect to Carlos Arroyo, Yao Ming, and (insert Slovenian superstar here), but the real test for Team USA isn't in the preliminary round. It's in the knockout stages, where the team will first likely meet Turkey or Lithuania, and then either Germany or Spain or France or Serbia. When it's down to eight teams, that's when the team has to perform at or near its peak to win.
And that's exciting. Yeah, the Dream Team was great. But you knew Angola and Australia had no shot. There was no drama. (Well, except for wondering if Christian Laettner would get into the game. Always a crapshoot.) There's going to be drama in early September. Whether it's self-inflicted or caused by a team on a roll (Spain), a young team finding itself (France), or the defending gold medalists asserting their will (Argentina), it'll be something we don't typically get out of international basketball.
Here are my predictions for the tourney. The top four teams from each group make it to the knockout stage, and I've listed them in the order I think they'll finish. After that, it's pretty self-explanatory. The pairings for the knockout rounds can be found here.

PRELIM ROUND
  GROUP A
Argentina
Serbia
France
Venezuela
Nigeria
Lebanon
  GROUP B
Spain
Germany
Japan
Panama
New Zealand
Angola
  GROUP C
Turkey
Brazil
Australia
Lithuania
Greece
Qatar
  GROUP D
USA
China
Puerto Rico
Italy
Senegal
Slovenia
  ROUND OF 16
Argentina def. Spain
  FINALS
USA def. Argentina

losers bracket. Okay, what the hell. Brazil beats Japan, China beats Germany, China beats Brazil for 5th. Germany beats Japan for 7th. And Turkey beats Spain in the third-place game.
The best game of the prelim round will be Spain v. Germany, unless France gets its act together and puts up a fight against Argentina. (They had better hurry - this game is Saturday.) In the round of 16, I look forward to possible matchups between Germany and France, and Brazil and Puerto Rico. If the semifinals end up as I predict, that will be some damn exciting basketball. Hell, even the third-place game would be awesome!
Let's hear your predictions in the comments.

Dumars: Darko was mistake

Pistons president Joe Dumars knows the Darko Milicic debate, in some ways, will never die. But the Milicic experiment is over after he was traded Wednesday to the Orlando Magic. The Pistons also sent Carlos Arroyo to the Magic for...

Weekend Preview: 12/9-12/11

With all of the snow and cold making it’s way across the country the past couple days, there’s no better way to spend your weekend holed up at home watching basketball. So for today’s weekend preview we’re gonna give you not one but THREE games of the week, one for each day of the weekend.

New Orleans/OKC Hornets at Portland Trailblazers, Friday, 10 pm EST

How about the Hornets as the most pleasant surprise over the first month of the NBA season? A team led by Chris Paul, PJ Brown and David West was 8-7 with wins over decent teams like Sacramento, Denver and Minnesota before dropping their last three. Now that they’re coming back to earth, you’ve got to wonder if the lineup might shuffle a bit – right now, Desmond Mason, JR Smith, and Speedy Claxton are all just short of playing 30-33 mpg – which is what the all need to have value. See if any of them are staking claim to those minutes.

For the Blazers, we discussed Darius Miles during the mailbag this week, and here’s a good chance to check out that rag-tag bunch of reserves who are going to be clamoring for his minutes. My money is still on Ruben Patterson to stand out above the crowd.

Boston Celtics at Dallas Mavericks, Saturday, 8:30 pm EST

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve been loving watching the Celtics this year. The Paul Pierce/Ricky Davis combo is pretty exciting, and the frontcourt jumble has kept things interesting from a fantasy perspective. Right now the hot hand to be seems to be Al Jefferson, at least according to Sports Troopers, but that could always change in a week. Still, for those of you looking for big man help, keeping on top of this situation and guessing correctly could see some nice dividends.

Meanwhile, in Dallas, I’ll personally be looking for Jason Terry to come back to the court after I traded for him the day before he went down with a quad injury (thanks, Jason!). But I’ll also be watching Adonal Foyle part II, DeSagana Diop. 2.1 blocks and 4.8 boards in just 17 mpg? If he manages to start scoring, he’ll have a shot at taking away some time from Erick Dampier, and might actually have fantasy value this year. Repeat, MIGHT.

Detroit Pistons at LA Clippers, Sunday, 9 pm EST

We also talked about the Pistons in this week’s mailbag, and right now they’re playing some great basketball. They’re really a different team under Flip Saunders, much more offensive-minded. Plus, from a fantasy perspective, they’re pure gold – with all 5 starters getting between 33 and 38 mpg. But I’ll be watching the three top reserves – Maurice Evans, Antonio McDyess, and Carlos Arroyo. They’ve all got fantasy potential should any of the big 5 go down for an extended period of time, so it’ll be nice to know what to expect.

As for the Clippers, just enjoy it. Everything is clicking right now for them – Elton Brand is my pick for MVP right now, Sam Cassell and Cuttino Mobley are doing everything the could have hoped, and Chris Kaman is the ugliest man to play basketball in a long time, and is hilarious to watch.

So there you have it. Enjoy the weekend!

2005 NBA Draft Preview by Gabe Kahn

Welcome to another round of NBA Roulette, more commonly known as the NBA Draft. As always, my crazy friend 'Neal and I get together and see if we can predict where each player will land in the first round using team needs, past tendencies and overall guess work that we like to refer to as "logic." It's a lot like throwing darts while blindfolded without even knowing if you're facing the target. As if it's not challenging enough, general managers everywhere love messing with our guesses by trading their selections even as the draft is going on. Last year, we got five out of 30 picks right, and, here's the kicker, we felt pretty good about ourselves. So take everything we say with a grain of salt, especially because 'Neal is at his caffeinated best during the draft. It's a sight to behold. Trust me.

Like every year, these picks were all made with the assumption that every team will select in this order, and that no trades will be made. Also like every year, I'll slow dance to Lady in Red with the 8-pound piece of machismo that is my dog if that actually happens. Onto the picks:

1. Milwaukee Bucks
Andrew Bogut- How can they pass on a potentially dominant big man when they desperately need a center?

2. Atlanta Hawks
Marvin WIlliams- Yes, they're stacked at the wing, but Williams is the type of player you build around.

3. Portland Trailblazers
Martell Webster- Assuming they keep this pick, and we're assuming they don't, Webster will be their man. Don't expect it to happen, though.

4. New Orleans Hornets
Chris Paul- From day one, Paul's been the best point guard in the draft. After all is said and done, that should still be true.

5. Charlotte Bobcats
Deron Williams- They wanted either Paul or the other Williams, but they'll be content to select the second best PG in the draft and team him up with Emeka Okafor.

6. Utah Jazz
Raymond Felton- Jerry Sloan needs a point guard and will either try to use this pick to trade up and grab Deron Williams/Paul, or he'll be content with the best PG available.

7. Toronto Raptors
Gerald Green- Considered by many to be the best talent in the entire draft, Toronto has needs everywhere except power forward and Green could be in the mold of Vince Carter.

8. New York Knicks
Channing Frye- Assuming Kurt Thomas is traded to Phoenix, Isiah Thomas will need more help than ever at center.

9. Golden State Warriors
Charlie Villanueva- The Warriors are a lousy team with depth at almost every position. Center is the weakest, so they'll take the most versatile big man left on the board.

10. Los Angeles Lakers
Fran Vasquez- Without a good option at the point, Phil Jackson will try to make up for the Lack-o’-Shaq. They’d like to move up and grab Green, though.

11. Orlando Magic
Antoine Wright- Wright is too good to pass up on this late in the draft. Will this move spell the end of the Stevie Franchise era in Orlando already?

12. Los Angeles Clippers
Yaroslav Korolev- Of all the rumors regarding promises, this one seems most likely to be true.

13. Charlotte Bobcats
Danny Granger- With Okafor, Primo Brezec and now Deron Williams, Bernie Bickerstaff now needs to fill up his wing positions. Granger is a ready-made contributor.

14. Minnesota Timberwolves
Sean May- Minny can get away with using an undersized PF because Kevin Garnett can make up for May's lack of length. We like this pick.

15. New Jersey
Hakim Warrick- Jersey hopes that Warrick will remind them of Kenyon Martin.

16. Toronto Raptors
Andrew Bynum- Since the Raptors are going to have to wait for Green to develop, they might as well wait for Bynum, too.

17. Indiana Pacers
Francisco Garcia- Larry Bird would probably like to add to Indiana’s point guard depth, but Roko Ukic has contract issues and Jarrett Jack is too much of a stretch at 17, so he'll try to replace Reggie Miller instead.

18. Boston Celtics
Chris Taft- Danny Ainge has never been concerned with taking the popular player. Ukic is a possibility here, too, and Danny might consider trading down. Say what you want about Taft's attitude, but the kid can play.

19. Memphis Grizzlies
Roko Ukic- The Griz need to replace Earl Watson and drafting Ukic allows them to trade Jason Williams for someone other than a point guard.

20. Denver Nuggets
Joey Graham- Denver needs a shooting guard and they'll be thrilled if a guy as good as Graham is still around this late in the draft.

21. Phoenix Suns
Ike Diogu- Phoenix has a tendency to draft good players, regardless of need. Diogu's ability to play both the 3 and the 4 fits in well with the Suns. Not to mention that it’s rumored Phoenix made a promise to him.

22. Denver Nuggets
Johan Petro- Nene's slow development and undetermined position leaves Denver weak at the 5-spot. The Ghost of Skita will scare Kiki Vandeweghe away from Martynas Andriuskevicius

23. Sacramento Kings
Rashad McCants- Getting McCants should make up for the loss of Cuttino Mobley.

24. Houston Rockets
Wayne Simien- They need a PG, but they need a PF, too. Simien is a bit small, but that's not so bad when you're playing next to Yao.

25. Seattle SuperSonics
Martynas Andriuskevicius – Without any legitimate players left on the board, they'll take a flyer on Andriuskevicius, leave him in Europe for a couple years and see if he develops. Because so many of their players are going into free agency, the Sonics are a real wild card here.

26. Detroit Pistons
Jarrett Jack- The Pistons wouldn't mind having someone to put behind Chauncey Billups besides Lindsey Hunter and Carlos Arroyo. Jack is steady, if unspectacular.

27. Utah Jazz
Julius Hodge- After selecting Felton, the Jazz still have a hole at SG. If they select Hodge, they have an opportunity to go very big with Carlos Boozer, Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko in the front court.

28. San Antonio Spurs
Andray Blatche- The Spurs will eventually need a center. They can afford to wait by selecting Blatche.

29. Miami Heat
Matt Walsh- With Eddie Jones possibly on the outs in Miami, the Heat will need a good role-playing small forward to step up.

30. New York Knicks
Monta Ellis- Troubled that, with Frye and Bruno Sundov, he has too much size, Thomas will take a PG with the final selection in the first round.

Arroyo is ready if needed

It's usually one of the most intense competitions in Pistons practice day after day. Guards Carlos Arroyo and Horace Jenkins usually are the last to leave the practice floor exhausted after playing one-on-one until somebody claims victory. They trade their best moves and best trash talk in a quest to improve each other's games. The hard truth is this Arroyo a reserve is the one who will get the playoff minutes. Jenkins knows he won't play because he's not on the playoff roster.

Another Update from Rob Babcock

I want to begin by thanking all of you for your support. We had a
challenging season and our fans have stayed with us throughout. Our
primary goal this year was to establish our philosophy and develop a
foundation that we can build on for the future. Our philosophy of team
basketball with hard work, discipline and community involvement has
been accepted by most of our players and all of our staff. We're not
where we want to be in this crucial area, but I am pleased with the
progress that we've made and I'm very encouraged about the attitudes of
our young players. Our team and staff have been very active in the
community, and we will continue to be committed to help our young
people in every way possible.

On the court, we certainly struggled at times, and we've had many issues
to deal with. We have not shied away from any of our issues and have
dealt with each one. Some of these issues are ongoing and are not
solved over night. We continue to work on those. Despite these
challenges, we made progress this season. While it may be difficult to
see on the surface, we have laid the groundwork for a good foundation.
Sam has instilled a style of play that is exciting to watch. Our point
production was up 14.3 ppg over last year. Our assists are up and our
turnovers are down. Our field goal percentage is up from .418 to .444,
our 3-pt percentage is up from .356 to .385, our FT percentage is up
from .750 to .774.

We
had some tremendous wins this year against some of the best teams in
the league. We beat the world champion Detroit Pistons, the former
champion San Antonio Spurs, and the Eastern Conference leader Miami
Heat. Who will ever forget the magical night when Donyell Marshall tied
the league record for 3 pointers and our team set the league record for
3 pointers in a victory over Philadelphia?

Through
adversity and some very tough losses, our players and coaches never
gave up. We always bounced back to compete hard the next game. We
certainly have some major deficiencies in the defensive and rebounding
areas, and we will certainly address those areas in the offseason.
Improving our defence and rebounding will be one of our major
objectives for next year.

We
have some young players that we are very excited about for the future
of this team. Chris Bosh had an outstanding season and with his
continued hard work, we feel that he's a future all-star. Matt Bonner
was one of the surprise rookies in the league this year and was very
valuable to our team coming off the bench. He's a restricted free
agent, we have the right to match, and we will make it a priority to
retain him for the future. Rafael Araujo did not have the year that we
anticipated, but he's a very hard worker and we still believe in his
potential to be a contributor to this team. Pape Sow was able to get
some playing time down the stretch and showed the potential that we saw
when we drafted him in the second round. Like Matt, Pape is a
restricted free agent that we will seek to retain. We have some solid
veterans to help our young players along.

Rafer
Alston admittedly had some areas to work on, but he has worked hard to
improve his game and we feel that he was the most productive of the
free agent point guards that were available to us (Derek Fisher, Troy
Hudson, Carlos Arroyo, Brent Barry).

Jalen
Rose had an outstanding season increasing his shooting percentages in
all areas and averaged 3 ppg more than the 03-04 season. Mo Peterson
also increased his shooting percentages in all areas and increased his
ppg by 4.2, while giving us a consistent effort at the defensive end.
Loren Woods is still a developing player but had some big games for us
this year, and proven veterans Eric Williams, Aaron Williams and Lamond
Murray are all capable of making contributions to our team next year.
Alvin Williams continues to work hard to come back from knee surgery
and we'll know his availability before the season begins. Donyell
Marshall and Milt Palacio had solid years for our team and could
certainly help us next year, but both are unrestricted free agents.
Until the draft, trades and free agency are evaluated it's too early to
determine if we'll retain them.

This
draft will be extremely important for our basketball team. It's not a
draft that has a lot of instant stars, but it is a draft that's deep
with potential. With two first round picks and two second round picks,
we have the resources to add some young talent to our team or help
facilitate trades. We really beefed up our scouting department this
year adding a Director of NBA Player Personnel, a Director of
International Player Personnel and another European Scout. I am leaving
shortly for two weeks of scouting in five different countries in
Europe. Our coaches have designed comprehensive offseason development
programs for each player, and we anticipate major improvements with
everyone.

When
I took this job last June, I said that it will take three years to get
this team turned around. This season has been invaluable for our staff
in that we now know all of our players inside and out, and we know what
our strengths, weaknesses and needs are for the future. We have an
outstanding company in MLSE, and my staff has learned how to work with
the experience and resources we have to help build our team. Most
importantly, we have learned what a great city Toronto is and what
great fans we have. We know that the fans deserve a winning team that
plays basketball the right way. We are committed to developing a team
that will make our fans proud. Now that we know where we are, we can
move forward with a specific strategic plan. Over the next two months I
will be sharing with you portions of that plan as well as information
on the draft and trade process.

I am very excited about the future of this team and I want to thank all of you again for your support as we continue to grow.

Arroyo wants to start

Carlos Arroyo sees himself as a starting NBA point guard. But thanks to a flare-up with Jazz coach Jerry Sloan one Arroyo says he still does not understand the Puerto Rican point is a backup these days. In Detroit. I wish I would have kept being the starter in Utah Arroyo said Sunday before facing his old Jazz team for the first time since it traded him last Jan. 21 to the defending NBA-champion Pistons. But that's not up to me. I mean I did everything I could to show him Sloan I cared as far as actions speak louder than words but in the army you're going to do whatever the captain says you are going to do you know?

As the Point Guard Turns

Ah, the frustrations of fantasy basketball. Two players who I ve been begging to get more playing time finally get put into situations where they are going to see that time and I miss out on both of them. Bah. Lots and lots of post-deadline PG situations to look at today, so let s get to it. With most fantasy trading deadlines fast approaching, this could be the last real chance to improve your team for the stretch run.

The Celtics situation is far from resolved. After Gary Payton was shipped to Atlanta, Delonte West who played a total of 120 minutes in the NBA prior to the trade stepped directly into the starting lineup the past two games and in 37 mpg put up 17.5/5.0/2.5 with 2.5 3s, 1.5 steals and 1 block on 64% shooting. Wow. The assists are low, which isn t surprising, and he should be looked at as more of a SG than a PG. But the 3s and steals are very welcome, and he s obviously a hot pickup. That said, Payton could be back in the fold very shortly. The Celtics will probably welcome him back if he wants to come back, but you have to wonder, should they? In their two games without him, with their new lineup featuring the rejuvenated Antoine Walker and West, they ve won tough road games at Utah and (an admittedly Steve Nash-less) Phoenix. It could be that this lineup of fresh legs is the way to go. Grab, West, hold on to Payton, but if The Glove comes back, I wouldn t be surprised to see them both have middling value at best. In his first game with C-Webb, Allen Iverson racked up 14 assists. The guy s just having a phenomenal year. If the 76ers can get past the Celtics for the Atlantic Division crown, it will be hard to deny him the MVP. Jason Kidd is #7 on the 30-Day Rater. He ll be one of the more interesting draft choices next year. He s obviously still worthy of a first-round pick, but how many people will be scared by his knee? A quiet week for Rafer Alston, both production-wise and blowup-wise. I m sure his owners will take it, though. Only 29.7 mpg in his last three isn t reason for concern, but it s a slightly interesting trend to watch. If you can buy low on Stephon Marbury right now, I d do it. The Knicks only have three guards on their active roster and one of those is the always-fragile Penny Hardaway. Expect Steph to see close to 40 mpg from here on out and to put up big numbers.

The Pistons are clicking on all cylinders. Wait, I didn t even mean for it to come out that way. Even if Shaq is completely healthy come conference finals time, the Pistons are looking like the team to beat in the East. Chauncey Billups continues his strong play and Carlos Arroyo is thriving in his backup role. The Pistons will have one of the best PG duos in the league over the next three years should they hold onto both of them. I suppose that technically Jeff McInnis is the PG in Cleveland, even though I talk about LeBron here all the time. But I mean, there s no news to report and it sure is a lot more fun to talk about LBJ than Jeff McInnis. Random LeBron thought of the day: I have one of these. I was thinking it d be going for more. Oh well. It was bittersweet seeing Kirk Hinrich lay it on my beloved Wiz on Friday night. Check out his mpg in the last six 42.8. Expect this to continue as the Bulls push not only for a playoff spot, but first round home-court advantage. He s still not getting as many assists as you d like, but he s going to be a stud from here on out. As for Chris Duhon, well he s seen 29.8 mpg in his last four, including three games of 30+. He s hitting open 3s, getting assists and a few steals. That said, he s #119 on the 15-Day Rater. Still, if you have PG games to make up, he s not a bad option. I do other things besides obsess fantasy basketball. In fact, I m in a band. (We both are, actually.) One thing I always have problems with is writing lyrics. Always drawing a blank. Maybe I ll write a song about how much I hate Jamaal Tinsley. The chorus could go, Day-to-day, why don t you just go away? Does that sound like a hit to you? Hmm, oh well. In any case, Tinsley is on the short list for most frustrating player in the league this year. Great numbers when he s out there, but he s absolutely killing his owners right now by being on the bench (not the IL), at a time in the season where most owners are cycling through all of their players in order to use their games in hand. It s really starting to look like he won t be a contributor the rest of the year. (Yes, I m trying reverse psychology. Yes, I realize that actually saying that means it won t work.) Anthony Johnson is still not an option he needs to play basically a perfect game just to be an average fantasy contributor. We re past the point of saying Mo Williams should be picked up. The question is who are his comparables as far as value for the rest of the season. BV pointed out his numbers earlier today, and they are tasty. Here s his deal: plenty of assists, very few 3s, average steals and scoring. Think normal Andre Miller for a good comp. If you need assists more than 3s, he s your man.

The Damon Jones binge continues. I like him better than Quentin Richardson for 3s from here on out. Gilbert Arenas got in one last monster game before Larry Hughes returns, going for 43/7/3 with 7 3s and 2 steals. Watching him and Mike Bibby duel was really a treat. There was also a Steve Blake sighting, which I couldn t let pass. In 34 minutes he went for 17/5/5 with 2 3s and a steal. It s all about opportunity, people. There s just not that much separating Blake from Dan Dickau. Remember when the Magic were one of the year s better stories? When they finish 37-45, four games out of the playoffs, those memories will be even more distant than they are now. Still, at least they re getting Jameer Nelson in there. I was clamoring for it, and in his first two starts he was good for 13.5/8.0/6.5 with 1 steal on 50% shooting. Now there s some talk that he creates bad defensive matchups and that his spot in the starting lineup isn t completely secure. Eh. I d still take my chances. I maintain he ll be a Jamaal Tinsley type, although it looks like he ll be more valuable on the boards and he might not his as many 3s as of yet (it took Tinsley a few years). Hopefully he won t inspire me to write hateful songs about him. Oh right, I didn t get him, so he won t. As for how this affects Steve Francis he s still the same incredibly overrated player he s always been. And now he ll have fewer assists. Brevin Knight has seen 30+ in two straight. You know what you re getting. He s like a rich man s Rick Brunson. Or something like that. Tyronn Lue alert! In his four games since returning from injury, he s received 36 minutes, and put up 15.3/2.8/7.0 with 0.5 steals and 1.0 3s. Solid, but a few things to notice: The assists are a bit high, expect him to be closer to 5. The 3s and steals are about right. He should be closer to 1.5 3s, but he s never been a top thief. He s seeing plenty of PT now, and should for the near future. But I ll echo the rest in thinking that those 13 year-old kids at the end of the Hawks bench might start taking his time as we get closer to April.

There s an emerging trend in San Antonio, and that s of Tony Parker being the secondary scoring option behind Tim Duncan. He averaged 20.4 ppg in February compared to Manu Ginobili s 16.5. Man is that PG situation in Dallas frustrating. After scoring 18 points in three games, Jason Terry goes off for 27 on Saturday. Don Nelson needs to keep him in the lineup, although it should be said that in Terry s two best games in February, the Mavs lost both times. That probably doesn t mean much. You have to stick with him and hope that maybe Brad Miller lays another one into Devin Harris, and Darrell Armstrong too, while he s at it. Although that would certainly upset this guy. It s just wrong, I tell you. Who s the one who s been yapping endlessly about Mike James all year? Me. Who snagged him the moment he got traded to Houston. BV. That stands for Bastard Verymuch. Hmm, I could have probably done better. Oh well. So out of all of the newly valuable PGs, it should come as no shock that I like James the best. Bob Sura s on the IL, Rod Strickland was given the boot, Andre Barrett s on the IL yeah, Moochie Norris and his hair are around, but this is James s show, and that was very evident as they put him in the starting lineup in his first game and he was good for 19/2/3 with 3 steals and 3 3s in 34 minutes. This is an especially good game, but he will be solid. Don t expect tons of assists, but the 3 and steals will be there. Until Sura gets back, he s got every chance to be as good as, say, Chucky Atkins. Remember, Atkins is the 62nd best player in the league this year, fantasy-wise. That s good. Ho-hum in Memphis. Jason Williams is the man, but you ll have to deal with games like Saturday when Earl Watson is the better player and J-Will gets only 23 minutes. I like Mike James more as long as Sura s out, unless you really need assists. We got our first look at post-trade deadline New Orleans and it wasn t pretty at all. That s a very Hubie-esque looking box score, with 10 guys seeing at least 14 minutes and no one logging more than 35. Dan Dickau stepped up with 22 points, 3 assists and 3 3s, but if you can sell high right now, you might want to try. He s playing for a contract, so you know he ll look to put up numbers, but his PT is in the hands of Byron Scott. As for Speedy Claxton, he might be able to salvage some value, but if they keep sharing time like that in the Big Easy, it will be tough for anyone to really distinguish themselves.

We re approaching 2,000 words. Sports Guy would be proud. My employer wouldn t be. Luke Ridnour is on the verge of uselessness. I guess you can throw out yesterday s game because it was a blowout early on, but that s still one decent game out of his last four. He s lucky Antonio Daniels has hit a rough patch as well. It s unlikely Ridnour will be removed from the starting lineup all season, but he s no Mike James. Sam Cassell has been every bit as frustrating as Jamaal Tinsley this year. Even more so. Sammy owners, I feel for ya. He s slowly working his way to the point where he can re-enter the starting lineup. With Latrell Sprewell looking like he might have finally turned it around (someone should fine me for saying that), if Sammy can come back the Wolves can make that push to get swept by the Spurs in the first round. Continue to be patient. But then again, what else can you do? You think Andre Miller was glad to see Earl Boykins banished to the bench. Maybe it s a mental thing. Boykins still saw almost 30 mpg off the bench, just slightly below what he was getting as a starter, but it still made all the difference in the world for Miller. Hopefully George Karl makes this a permanent change. It s best for everyone; even Boykins might hold his value. But probably not. He won t make it to the line 16 times every game. Yesterday was the first time Damon Stoudamire was held to single digits since Jan. 2. He s been over 20 only once in the past five games. Is his run over, or should you buy low? The minutes are still there, so I m buying (relatively) low. Keith McLeod should be a top point guard option from here on out. Ha, just making sure you re still paying attention this far in. You should be, I mean, is your job really any more exciting? Well, it s gotta be more exciting than the Jazz PG situation, at least.

Leandro Barbosa got plenty of PT with Steve Nash out (36.3 mpg), but didn t light it up, all things considered: 15.3/4.7/3.7 with 1.7 steals and 1 3. Very solid, but on the Suns it s easy to have high expectations. Since Nash is likely to miss a couple more games as we wind down, he s a good guy to have around for single game fill-ins. I always say how much I love Mike Bibby. No, not that like that. Not entirely like that, at least. He s always been better in real life than fantasy, but this is the year that s changed, and with Chris Webber taking his Monistat 7 to Philly, Bibby will be a total stud the rest of this year and next year and the year after, etc. He s #13 on the Rater, #4 in the last 30 Days and just might be a late-first rounder next year. Maybe. Chucky Atkins will be up and down with Kobe Bryant back, but his 3s will keep him valuable. Rick Brunson is fine for those of you who need assists, but he just doesn t shoot/score. He was getting a lot more 3s last time he saw lots of PT. Not this time. Poor man s Brevin Knight, right? And finally, the Warriors. Good to see Baron Davis out there. Hard to see him coming off the bench too much longer, and the Warriors probably want to keep his minutes down so as not to risk an injury in a meaningless season (insert Warriors meaningless season joke here), but he might want to show his new home crowd that he s still got it. Derek Fisher owners should get ready for the letdown. After averaging 43 mpg in his last four, he was back down to 33 last night. Still put up an awesome 19/4/2 with 3 steals and 3 3s, once his minutes slip into the 20s, his time will be up. That said, it s not like he isn t signed for another 5 years, so the Warriors might as well keep running him out there because like it or not, he s a part of their future.

Pistons Mid-Season Report

The mid-season is here, and the Detroit Pistons are the center of criticism from their coaches and the media. They ve been accused of not playing hard, but have shown at times that they can rattle off lengthy win streaks.

So let s take a look at how they are doing individually with a mid-season report. Also, instead of a letter grading system, let me introduce a rating system.

1 - Excelling
2 - Above Average
3 - Average
4 - Below Average
5 - Disappointing

Guards

Richard Hamilton is the leading scorer of the Pistons with 20.5 points per game with 4.2 assists per game and a .440 shooting percentage. He s been logging nearly 40 minutes per game all season and handling the task well. His shot from the sides is as good as it s ever been. One area of concern is his streaky shooting consistency. Although I wouldn t expect him to shoot .500 each night, there have been nights where he s shot in the .350-.400 range. Hamilton needs look for better shots and overcome mid-game slumps. Mark: Average.

Chauncey Billups is certainly playing well in the clutch situation again this season. His assists are up and he seems to be moving the ball a little more. Unfortunately, he s moving the ball too much. I ve seen Chauncey with open lanes to the basket. He starts to take the steps towards it, and then he feeds the ball to someone else that isn t expecting it. I know he s just trying to be a good point guard and create situations, but he needs to watch the film and learn when and when not to pass the basketball. Mark: Average

Lindsey Hunter is the long time veteran of the bench. His job has been to backup Chauncey Billups. With the loss of Mike James, Hunter has been taxed with long minutes that seem to be taking a toll on him. His shots are off and he seems warm out by the middle of the game. His 4.9 points per game are a career low. Hunter must work on taking better shots. He s shooting .355 percent this season. He s lost focus of what a point guard is supposed to do. When he s in coverage, he s no longer passing, he s battling. Better ball movement, and the help of their new point guard, will be key for Hunter in the second half of the season. Mark: Disappointing

Carlos Delfino is the newest member of the Pistons. He s a shooting guard that stayed an extra year overseas to get his game ready for the NBA level. Expectations were high, but so was his energy when the season started. Delfino needs work on his free throws. He s shooting .667, and bumping that up into the .750 range would add some fuel to the lax scoring of the bench. He also needs to add some assists and move the ball a little better. Carlos has been hurt all but 13 games this season. He s off to a good start otherwise. Mark: Below Average

Horace Jenkins is a guy that is doing well in the role he s been given. He s appeared in six games and scored 3.7 points per game in the 7.8 minutes he was given. His shooting percentage is low at .350. Better shooting would be the ideal way for Jenkins to get noticed. He won the spot on the roster over Smush with his salary being lower. That won t keep him here longer than this season. Mark: Below Average

Ronald Dupree has done a good job getting noticed with the time he s been given. In 21 games he s played 10 minutes per game with 2.6 points per game. His role has been limited, but he s been improving each time he steps onto the court. He plays hard, moves the ball well, and has been able to make shots when needed. Although a lot of people expected more from Dupree, he s young and his role is limited with this team. Considering all the factors, I d say he s been a great situational player for the Pistons. Mark: Above Average

Carlos Arroyo is hard to figure out. He s only been a Piston for three games, and in Utah he was pushed to the end of the bench because he and Jerry Sloan didn t get along. I will say that he s adding a lot of energy to the Pistons bench. He s also creating plays and scoring some points. Considering there is not enough data to give him a mark, I ll just leave it with this: Carlos will make a difference for the Pistons in the second half.

Forwards

Tayshuan Prince has been quietly shooting .471 percent from the field. He s also been taking care of business on the defense end with his long reach and 3.9 rebounds per game. Prince has been criticized for his 12.3 points per game. Some feel he should be at 15 or better. With a starting lineup that includes two well shooting guards, that just isn t going to happen. His points per game average is up from last season and his shooting is better than ever. The only thing Tayshaun needs to work on is keeping that ankle in shape. Mark: Excelling

Rasheed Wallace has some of the same problems that Chauncey has. He s so unselfish that he misses opportunities at the basket in favor of passing the ball. When he doesn t take pass the ball, he often finds himself in bad situations and has been struggling with battles under the boards. His defense has been pretty good with 7.7 rebounds per game and a couple blocks. Sheed needs to look for better shots and regain some toughness on the offensive boards. Mark: Below Average

Antonio McDyess was one of the heavily anticipated additions to the bench. With health concerns out of the way, Dice had the hype to come in here and score 50 points per game. Although that didn t happen, and a bad leg kept him out of a couple games, he s been a great backup for the Wallace brothers. He s tough under the boards, shoots a high .535 shooting percentage, but is weak with his free throws. He can make a difference in a game when called on. He s athletic and has a good vision of where the ball is going. Mark: Above Average

Darvin Ham has been one of the most disappointing guys on this team this season. He showed so much promise last year with his athleticism and ability to score. Ham has been in 30 games for seven minutes with less than a point per game. He can hit three pointers and make free throws, but has made no impact on the game, even in situational roles. Mark: Disappointing

Centers

Ben Wallace is still the lifeline of this team. Putting aside the fact that he s the strongest defensive player in the league, Big Ben s free throw percentage his dipped a little bit. His blocks are down, but his field goal percentage is rising. Overall Ben is continuing to make a difference on this team. Without him, they give up 100 points per game. With him, they gave up less than 90. Ben continues to work hard each game and press teams under the basketball. Mark: Above Average

Elden Campbell is in Utah now, but he was a part of this team in situations. He was the force against Shaq that helped slow him down. Campbell has seen better days, and only appeared in 21 games this season. He logged 10.8 minutes per game and shot poorly. He didn t rebound well, didn t block shots, and wasn t one you could count on. Mark: Disappointing

Darko Milicic got in the game a few times this season. With suspensions and injuries, Darko has managed to get into 17 games and play 6.6 minutes per game. It is hard to get a handle on this guy. At times he looks to be making progress. Other times, he s the same old Darko. He comes into games and fouls out in five minutes. Darko needs to continue to develop himself into an NBA player. He must work hard in practice and value each minute he gets during games. Mark: Average

The team is coming together just fine. They have been mostly average, but that isn t going to win another Championship. They need to play more like a team, work on their ball movement, and get that hunger for winning back in them.

Arroyo helping Detroit rev its engine

DETROIT - Carlos Arroyo has been a Detroit Piston for almost six weeks. And Joe Dumars is pleased. ''He's the most creative guy we have on the team - instantly'' said Dumars the Pistons' president of basketball operations after watching Arroyo score 13 points in 18 minutes in Detroit's 97-88 victory over the New York Knicks last Tuesday. ''This team needed another general on the floor and he's a general when he's on the floor. I just think he's a perfect fit and I am so happy to have him here.''

Mid Season: Northwest Division / Utah Jazz

<o :p></o>

The Jazz have proven one thing this season. Andrei Kirilenko
is the life and blood of the team. After picking up Carlos Boozer fresh off his
betrayal of the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Jazz were thought of as a team ready
to make a run at the top of their division, or in the very least, a playoff
spot.<o :p> </o>

Well, Kirilenko went down early to a knee injury and missed
a few months of actions. The team couldn t take up the slack for AK47 and
quickly faded away, which was very unlike any team coached by Jerry Sloan.
Sloan has a history of running systems that take advantage of every
individual skill available to him from his players, but no system was able to
make up for the scoring, rebounding, defense, and hustle the Russian can bring.<o :p> </o>

Boozer himself has been questioned by the team owner himself
recently. The owner made remarks questioning Boozer s heart and ability to step
up and lead when his team most needs him. This is quite the hit.<o :p> </o>

The Jazz also found themselves with a revolving door at the
point guard. They started the season with the newly re-signed Carlos Arroyo on
the injured list, who suffered an injury against the Knicks in the preseason.
The team still had Keith McLeod who performed very well in the first couple of
weeks and then saw his play time reduced. Raul Lopez has been playing the bulk
of the minutes lately, and Arroyo was traded to Detroit after having some small run ins with
the coach and landing firmly in the doghouse.

<o :p></o>For a Sloan coached team to have the season it s had, even
now that Kirilenko has returned to the lineup, is surprising to say the least.<o :p> </o>

The Jazz have a serious lack of consistency at the point
guard and have no depth to think of up the middle. Aside from Boozer taking
consistent minutes, there is no one else who is cemented in for sure minutes.
Even Mehmet Okur who was signed as a free agent has seen spotty play, maybe
because he is not a pure rebounding post player since he likes to step out for
jump shots.<o :p> </o>

One thing is for sure. The way the team has played this
season seems right if you break down the personnel, but you would never have
thought that at the beginning of the season, especially because Jerry Sloan
wouldn t allow something this bad to happen.<o :p> </o>

Count On: Andrei Kirilenko
Best Addition: Carlos Boozer
Rookie To Watch: Kris Humphries
Spark Plug: Raja Bell

On Tap: The Utah Jazz

If you were going to play one team when you re leading scorer will be watching the game with his ankle elevated and iced, the worst defensive team in the league would be your top choice.

Welcome to Los Angeles, Utah Jazz. Glad to see you.

Teams score on the Jazz like they worked for Heidi Fleiss. It s the kind of confidence-boosting game the Lakers need before Minnesota and others come to town.

Tonight we also get a close look at the on the trading block point guard Carlos Arroyo. He got a big contract last off season and was considered the point guard of the future in Salt Lake, now he sits in coach Sloan s dog house. If the Lakers do make a trade and I think it s still better than even money that they don t this may be the most likely option.

Utah s defensive efficiency this season is dead last in the league they are giving up 107.4 points per 100 possessions (the Lakers are 22nd at 103.6). Teams shoot well against them (49.5% eFG%) and get to the free throw line 33.3 times per game against them, more than any other squad in the league.

In fact, the only team that seems to have struggled scoring against Utah was the Lakers, but I think we can throw out the last game between these two the second game of the season, when the Lakers eFG% was 33%. To quote Chick, The Lakers couldn t throw a pea in the ocean that night. I doubt that sad an offensive performance will be repeated, plus Andrei Kirilenko blocked eight shots in that game, and he s on the IR right now.

The Jazz miss Kirilenko badly he was their most valuable player by far.

That said, the two guys who burned the Lakers last game will be the two starting forwards for the Jazz tonight Carlos Boozer at the four and Matt Harpring at the three. Boozer hit 10 of 13 shots that game, Harpring hit 9 of 11 and was 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. This means that Lamar and Caron not only need to pick up the offensive production tonight, they need to play big on the defensive end as well.

The Lakers should be able to score from just about any position on the floor (the only place Utah s oPER is below the league average is center). It will be interesting to see what kind of defensive adjustments Utah makes to playing the Lakers after the Golden State game.

Even without Kobe, this is a game the Lakers can win if they put in the effort on defense and they take care of the ball the Lakers shoot better than Utah, they just can t have a bunch of empty possessions.

Right now the Lakers are 1-0 with Kobe on the IR (2-0 if you count games they had to win without him). If they can stay above .500 with him on the bench, it will be a huge boost for the squad. Plus, don t we all love the idea of the Lakers finally winning three in a row with Kobe just watching?

A rumor saying that the Pistons are interested in Utah point guard Carlos Arroyo may be true, but the sides would likely be unable to work out a trade. The two sides talked a week to 10 days ago, but...
