Moneyhoops Era Begins?

Huge story out of Houston: The Rockets have named their next general manager, and it's a stats dude.
The "Theo Epstein" is apparently Daryl Morey, who teaches a class at MIT, used to work on Wall Street and works as a stats/operations/information guy for the Celtics front office.
A bright fellow named John Quincy at the APBRmetric board dug up some more on Morey, including this blog post briefly annotating a speech Morey gave at MIT in April 2005. I can't seem to run down a transcript of said presentation, but we'll take the blogger's word that Morey talked about the four factors.
It's also worth noting that a Google cache of Celtics.com's "Inside the Numbers" series of articles on basketball analytics lists Morey and Mike Zarren as authors. (The current incarnation of "Inside the Numbers" lists only Zarren and has only three articles, the most recent one being a solid primer of offensive efficiency. Zarren is listed as Boston's "Basketball Operations Analyst, responsible for assisting team decision-making via quantitative analysis." (Thanks to Google, I've also gathered that Zarren is a 2004 Harvard Law graduate and a former editor-in-chief of the school's Journal of Law and Technology.)
Morey's best article on Celtics.com may be this piece on beating opponents by increasing your number of shot attempts. It's interesting because the pendulum in the statsworld seems to have swung towards efficiency as the biggest pillar, when offensive rebounding and limiting turnovers combined are almost as important as shooting percentage. (I'm way guilty of this, by valuing Kevin Martin true shooting percentage way more than Kenny Thomas's offensive rebounding percentage.)
Morey also has a questionable stats-related article in the cache as well, one that argues that because Al Jefferson got a lot of minutes in his age-20 season, and because most players who got a lot of minutes in their age-20 seasons turned out to be stars or solid starters, Al Jefferson is therefore destined to be a star or solid starter. That argument is pretty faulty for fairly obvious reasons - you can't just take a youngster, give him minutes and watch his blossom. It's at best a baby block in the work towards serious prospect analysis.
Regardless, getting someone who understands the growing statistical revolution budding in basketball into a GM chair is huge. It's really another domino: first, it was Dean Oliver coming into the Seattle Sonics organization. Now, it's Daryl Morey getting the reins (though not until the 2007 offseason). It's getting much better.

Mostly Miscellany, Thanksgiving Eve

Because bloggers don't get extended holidays...
The web version of The Bee has failed to tell me the chances of Peja sitting out tonight. It simply says that he's day-to-day. I mostly think that's why there's no line for tonight's game - no one knows if the guy will suit up.
Speaking of suits, here are my extended thoughts about Monday's game:

I vomited in the second quarter, and it wasn't due to the Kings performance. It was the performance of the Comcast technicians: For about 10 minutes, the feed was shaky and fuzzy and dim. I had a Blair Witch flashback. Couldn't get Dramamine fast enough.

I know this was said a lot in the 2004 playoffs when Tony Parker was running circles around the Lakers, but would it kill someone to just lay the lumber on him when he drives to the baseline and floats there, looking for a open man? He's French - he'll seriously think twice about it once pummelled (unless he knows he has big, powerful allies coming over). I might be more annoyed by TeePee than I am by Balki. Good grief, what an annoying team.

Gregg Popovich: The mullet will not get you extra Coach of the Year votes. There's a reason the NHL in the #5 major league.

Not sure I understand why Shareef got a technical. But he didn't seem to mind. I did understand why Bonzi got a technical, and he did seem to mind. Shows how much I know.

Either Kenny Thomas has a really good relationship with Francisco Garcia where he feels comfortable enough to yell at him about coming to double Tim Duncan (and fouling him), or Kenny Thomas is a very self-assured defender.

Of all the disappointments on this team so far, Brian Skinner has been the biggest. He's not doing anything but taking up space when on the floor. Truly discouraging after a mammoth preseason filled with jumpers, blocks and putbacks. We need that Brian Skinner.

Fabricio Oberto: Funny-looking from a distance, rockstar lookalike from up close.

It's amazing that Pop took Duncan out when he got his fifth foul. Pop knows as well as everyone that no ref is going to a sixth foul against Tim Duncan in a close game.

The league is going to figure out Manu Ginobili one of these days, as if he was Barry Zito. He's flashy, but he can be stopped.

Peja can do better on the suit. Remember, P, you're an upcoming free agent! You gotta look money, all the time.

Still no word on the standings in the NBA celebrity fantasy league. If I'm Bill Simmons, I start releasing results so that a nasty rumor about losing handily to Star Jones doesn't surface.
f the Monday night Packers-Vikings game. Also, I really have no idea what to make of Simmons' shoes in said segment. Especially after seeing him rocking shell-toe Adidas in the NY Times piece.
Last Simmons item: The controversy over Renee Herlocker is stupid, and the Intern is a jerk for not giving a link to YAYsports!, even after admitting someone had already made her (semi-)famous. It shows a certain out-of-touchness.
Another sign fantasy sports are inherently evil: I've been openly rooting for Kobe to score 40 a night. Yes, that Kobe. I'm going to hell.
Nice shootout between Gonzaga and Michigan State last night. Adam Morrison is like Kyle Korver with driving ability. I turned it on near the end of regulation. Tom Izzo really takes the fun out of Hawaiian shirts, no?
Back later with an awesomely robust game preview.

The Warriors Lose! Who cares it's only pre-season. However they did play well. Baron Davis pitched in a game high 22 points 4 rebs, 1 steal and 6 assists, and Troy Murphy put in a solid 15 points and 8 rebs. The Warriors just could not contain Peja Stojakovic and Kevin Martin who each scored 15 points as well as Kenny Thomas who pitched in 11 points and a game high 9 rebounds. The Warriors played well to start the game off, but lost the lead with 8:13 to go in the first quarter. From then on the Kings never relinquished their lead. Furthermore a lax 2nd quarter in which the Warriors were out scored 29-18 put the Warriors completely out of the game. Let's just hope that the Warriors will be better at coming from behind during the regular season. Link for the recap.

2005 Fantasy Basketball Busts

Knowing who to draft, obviously, is important. Equally important is to know who (whom?) NOT to draft. The guys listed below are guys that we feel might be over-valued, which isn’t to say that they shouldn’t be drafted, but you should let them slide past their “projected” spots for a few rounds. Most of these guys are long-time veterans who are losing these luster – others are overhyped young’uns. Each are dangerous.

PG: Sam Cassell, LAC – Cassell was no doubt a disappointment last year both for fantasy owners and his real-life owners. Now that he’s been shipped to the Clippers and handed the starting job over Shaun Livingston, some might expect a rejuvenated Cassell. Don’t be fooled – he’s simply holding the spot for Livingston, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the youngster starting by Thanksgiving. Other potential busts: Jamaal Tinsley, Mike James.

SG: Eddie Jones, Mem – This is it for Eddie Jones as far as fantasy value goes. In an ideal situation last year, getting 35 mpg as a third/fourth option with plenty of outside looks, only his three-pointers really kept him off the waiver wire. This year, expect no more than 25-27 mpg, and a spot on your bench until he proves himself worthy. Other potential busts: Michael Finley, Ben Gordon.

SF: Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Sac – Back in his heyday, Abdur-Rahim was probably overrated as a fantasy player, putting up some of the emptiest 20 and 10 seasons this side of Zack Randolph. Now that he’s getting older, on a team where he’s no better than the fourth option, and competing for playing time with Kenny Thomas and Corliss Williamson, we’re very happy to wait until the 6th or 7th round before considering him. Other potential busts: Mike Dunleavy, Darius Miles.

PF: Juwan Howard, Hou – I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know with Howard. His value is borderline at absolute best. He might go in the last couple of rounds but I wouldn’t even spend a pick on him there. His health and playing time are both in doubt, and there are much better risks to take late. Other potential busts: PJ Brown, Keith Van Horn.

C: Michael Olowokandi, C – We’ve got a saying here in Washington: Fool me once, shame – shame on you. Fool me twice … uh … I won’t get fooled again! Olowokandi has been fooling fantasy players just about every year, and now, with a rotation at center and a coach he’s off on the wrong foot with, Kandi man has finally given us a reason not to draft him this year. Thanks, Mike! Other potential busts: Eddy Curry, Joel Przybilla.

Anyone else out there that some of you guys think are overvalued?

Nice Guys Finish... First?

Ah, Geoff Petrie. Intelligent, shrewd, calculating and um... a sweetheart?

Sam Amick reports that Petrie has rescinded the qualifying offer made to Darius Songaila, allowing the Scrapmaster to sign a one-year deal with Chicago.

Typically, restricted free agents can't sign a one-year. But when Petrie rescinded the qualifying offer, which allowed the Kings to match any offer sheets signed by Darius, the Lithuanian became an unrestricted free agent.

Amick writes that Songaila will try to free agent market again next year. We're not sure how many minutes he'll get in the CHI, but just by being on the open market as a UFA next July will get him more money than he could've otherwise this fall. So it's a win-win for Darius.

We can assume two major reasons Petrie didn't try to re-sign Darius: minutes and money. Shareef Abdur-Rahim is the starter, and will play 30-38 minutes per night. Kenny Thomas is the back-up, will probably the sixth- or seventh-man, and will get 20-25 minutes between the 3 and 4. That leaves little for a guy like Darius. Plus, with the back-up 4 making $7 million +, even a paltry $2.2 million for Songaila is overpaying the position.

But what about next season? If Petrie can move KT during the season or early next off-season, isn't there then room for a young guy like Songaila? Darius might get to mid-level status next offseason - he could've demanded $3.5-4 million early this offseason. If there's an open slot at the back-up 4, Darius and his agent Mark Bartelstein could very well remember Petrie's good faith dealings and pick Sacramento over other teams waving the $5.1 million mid-level around. That's worth some thought.

Darius, it's sad to say goodbye. But we wish you well in the CHI (except when you're playing us). Hope to see you back in royal purple soon.

Stojakovic, Mobley power Kings past Sonics

Peja Stojakovic scored 24 points, Cuttino Mobley had 21 and the Sacramento Kings emphatically avoided getting swept in their season series with the SuperSonics, beating Seattle 122-101 Tuesday night.

Kenny Thomas scored 20 points, and Mike Bibby had 15 points and 10 assists as the Kings made a season-high 58.8 percent of their shots to stay in fifth place in the Western Conference standings.

Tick, Tick, Tick

Less than two hours until the trade deadline and the morning after a very good win for the Lakers, getting wins you're not playing your best is what playoff teams do and well start with the words of GM Mitch Kupchak from the LA Times this morning.

"It's unlikely we're going to make a trade," Laker General Manager Mitch Kupchak said.

The two big rumored deals for the Lakers involved some version of a Peja for Odom deal with Sacramento, but that isn't happening now that Webber's gone they need Peja's scoring. The other was some kind of deal for Baron Davis, but if he is going anywhere it appears to be to Golden State. I wasn't fond of either of those deals for the Lakers, so I think Mitch s stance is for the best.

-------------------------------------------

Two thoughts on executed trades:

Getting Webber could be huge for Philly, if his knees hold up, but I don't really get it for Sacramento. I understand they are trying to get back to the success they had when Webber started last season on the IR. I understand it was going to be hard to get equal value for Webber (PER of 21.35) but the three guys Sacramento got Kenny Thomas (13.48 PER), Brian Skinner (6.13) and Corliss Williamson (14.94) not only are average or below average replacements, they have contracts that run through at least 2007. Sacramento is stuck with these guys for a few years.

We'll see what happens to Sacramento, but they are 5 games ahead of the Lakers, so they wouldn't be easy to catch.

Jiri Welsch is worth a first rounder?

76ers hold off Hornets, tie for first (AP)

Allen Iverson was hardly concerned Philadelphia wasted a 25-point lead in the fourth quarter. All that mattered was that the 76ers held on for a win and grabbed a share of first place. Kenny Thomas had 21 points and 15 rebounds, Iverson scored 29, and Philadelphia survived a disastrous fourth quarter before beating the New Orleans Hornets 95-91 Monday.
